I would not consider participating in one in my own backyard, but it might be a great way to round out a trip to somewhere new. Caching near home is what I do to relax and slow down, so racing around with a gaggle of folks and not getting the true joy of the final search would ruin what would otherwise be many weekends worth of lazy afternoons. But if I wanted to see a new city in a fun and slightly manic manner with a like minded set of people I might join in.
