We're hoping that someone can please explain letterboxing, stamping and the whole thing.

Being only a little under 2 months into this, and don't know a lot of people doing geocaching yet (Jordy) is hopeing to attend the Feb 2nd event if time allows (B-day of our Lone_woof). Kris is at a tradeshow working.

Our basic grasp is - we need to buy a stamp and a log book. Then we follow the instructions and when we find the "box" we stamp the log in the box with our stamp, and stamp our log book with the stamp in the box.

Is this the right idea?

Second question, with 7 children who are never with us at the same time caching it seems, we finally set them up with their own accounts on here. We went and logged their finds under their accounts for the past - they didn't sign the log book when they were there under their "name" as they didn't have one then. And we only logged the visits that they were each at.

Is there anything wrong with this?

Thirdly - any issues using a metal detector to find the Cache's? Would make looking in the snow easier.. as we like going after the "non city-fied caches" - but thought we'd ask if this would disqualify or be wrong..

Thank you very much

The Tulameen Turtles
(AKA 240Jordy - Geocaching.com can't change our user name, as it starts with a number they're having technical difficulties.. oh yes last questions - if they finally can change the name will it delete our finds?)

Letterboxing and Geocaching are different. Letterboxing has its own website and you don't need a GPSr to find a letterbox. Geocaching does have letterbox hybrids, but you still need to have a GPSr to find them.

For a geocache, you do not need a stamp. When you find a geocache, you just sign the logbook and make any trades with the items in the cache. Make sure you trade fairly ie. same value for same value. If you find a travel bug or geocoin, you can take those if you plan to move them to another geocache. You do not need to trade for them. You then log your visit online, making notes of any trades.

You can log the finds for your children under their new accounts. Just log them on the date you actually found the cache and make a note that you are logging your childrens' finds as they have their own account now. No one should give you any problems.

Using a metal detector is fine. Sometimes it is useful, sometimes it is not. The hints on the cache page will usually help and you can look for tell tale signs like a bunch of sticks that don't look natural.

If Groundspeak changes your username, you shouldn't lose any of your finds. If they can't or won't, you could always create a new username and re-log all your finds just as you plan to do with your childrens' accounts.

The event in February is definitely the place to bring your questions. There will be lots of experienced cachers around to help you out.

About Letterboxing, the Letterbox Hybrid cache will have a stamp , pad and logbook. However you don't need a personal stamp to go do the cache but it's neat to have one from the start. I have a few letterbox caches out there and would love to see more, so far I have made my own stamps and the last being Darth Vaders Head turned out great. My personal stamp is not that good but may make a new one.

The erasers are expensive, if anyone know were to find big erasers cheap let me know, all i can find at dollar stores are too small.

You can buy some really nice stamps at Michael's that would fit your profile "turtles" easy enough.

Thank you both for the clarification, being that we've now reached Cache #101 in about 2 months we're almost ready to fully venture into the other types then just the "traditional" ones.

Finally placed a couple of our own in very "daring" spots.. lol yes highly busy areas, but isn't that half the fun.. Smile

Sitting here on a snowy day thinking I'd rather be outside looking for our elusive tupperware containers - but alas all things come to those who wait..

Thanks for the tip, we'll head to Michael's and find us a Yertle the Turtle.. lol

Again thanks for the clarification from both of you!
