Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever been doing the E.T. Highway down in Nevada and suddenly their GPS encounters some weird alien frequency near Area 51 that erases all of your maps from your GPS (like completely gone never to be seen again), deletes your finds history, erases approximately 700 of your last smilies, etc.?

Oh wait, that happened to me.

Anyone have any ideas why or how this could of happened?

The explanation I read some place was that programmers at Garmin built a "Doomsday" algorithm into the firmware. If the unit arrives at certain precise coordinates on an exact date (unspecified in the article), a subroutine "nukes" all the data from memory. Apparently while this is happening there is a small skull & crossbones logo that appears on-screen, accompanied by an evil laugh.

I think the site was called The Lone Gunmen, or something like that. Some blogs suggest the trigger date is day 90 of the calendar year.

Hope this helps! Beanie
