V is for?

Victory, Vengence? How about Vandalism?

In the last few months there have been at least 5 caches placed that have clearly been against the Guidelines. 3 that I know of are still there and still being found although 1 is disabled.

Read the logs. The "Great Hides!" outweigh the 'against Guidelines' by at least 10 to 1.

The next thing that is going to happen is that a Cacher will be charged with Vandalism for defacing Public Property in some way, either by burying cache containers, nailing or screwing caches to trees or writing coords on whatever. That is vandalism, plain and simple. When said cacher is charged with being a vandal, and fined accordingly, the Geocaching community will get a bad reputation by association.

Refer back to "The 'Great Hide' outweighs the 'against Guidelines' by 10 to 1."
For every encouraging log that one writes for a cache placement that is not allowed, at least 10 finders will probably duplicate that bad hide.

mtn-man does not know how a cache is actually placed. How many cachers write "buried a cache on Public Property without permission, nailed 10" nails into a tree" in their Reviewer notes? He relies on cachers to do the right thing. If you check off "I have read and understand the Guidelines and agree to them" then you have signed a contract.

Groundspeak doesn't have any Cache Police, nor should they. But obviously something else needs to happen so that cachers who bury in, nail to, etc., face some consequences. V is for Vandalism!

Bestred, I would agree with you if it were only 1 or 2 bad caches out there. Do you not see a pattern? One illegal cache is placed and hardly anyone that finds it complains...then more illegals crop up because silence is acceptance.
Surely we can do better than that in respect of the sport!
