Today we met up with a gaggle of cachers who were all bent on finding a particular cache. No success, sadly, but I posted this note on the cache page.

"As Scando said, a great effort by some very experienced cachers and a reluctant FTFer but still no luck. The area is indeed fragile and yet those initial cachers searched there, well knowing the damage they were doing and yet they still searched. Does that make any sense at all, especially when those cachers then went on to criticize the hide? No blame intended here as we are also guilty. Perhaps we all should take a stand on these kind of hides and refuse to find them at all. Don't log a find but write a protest note instead. That should work eventually."

That log was deleted by the CO so I am guessing that the CO and I are not going to be buddies anytime soon.

Why, then, was that log deleted? I have no idea but I am sticking with the protest note idea anyway. New cachers really could benefit from responsibe cachers setting a better standard in this sport.

And why was a legitimate find log deleted? The cache WAS found. There are never grounds to delete a found log.

The find log was reposted with PROOF.

I've posted a "Needs Archive" log on that particular cache. Let's see what the reviewer has to say about this cache. All the logs warning about the destruction to the environment that the cache will cause were deleted.

Cuddlefish's FTF log was reinstated, but the comments she had about the find were edited to make it appear that it was a double-plus awesome hide.

I'm not sure the person who deleted the logs (who I suspect was not the CO, but someone acting on the CO's behalf) is aware that those logs are still visible to the reviewer (mtn-man).

Lots of opportunity was given to the CO to amend the description or to move the hide. Deleting the negative logs was not a very helpful step.

Has anyone been able to contact the CO? With less than 10 finds and 2 caches placed it seems to be a great opportunity to do some outreach to a new cacher. Certainly they have behaved badly but it seems they have been dumped on a bit too. They should be educated about how serious it is to mess with logs as well as the rest of it.

Of course some people are harder to educate than others.

I've had email back and forth with the CO's niece who introduced the CO to geocaching and was there when the cache was placed. I've suggested BCGA GC101 events, and have offered to personally assist if wanted.

That is most excellent. It sounds like it has been a frustrating experience all round.

I wouldn't delete the note, but I would post a note of my own asking for there not to be so much negativity. Sometimes we have to put ourselves in the other cachers place and see what it feels like to be attacked. Logs are not meant for people to dump their doggy doo on. Be respectful. If there is something dangerous at the cache, state so. If there is a reason cachers should be careful state so, but politely, but all this negativity is not necessary. The not had not only belittled the hide, but the people who complained about the hide. Some people don't like to see that on their cache pages. Really if that type of thing is bothersome...contact groundspeak.
and about protesting and not getting the smiley....ya, I don't see that happening. Too many people love their numbers. Smile

Ok....I for one do not say 'doggy do' when I write things up...so I am guessing that was edited. What did I write, can someone contact me to let me know cause I know it wasn't the 's' word. (by the way....I spell it 'doggie' not 'doggy') Wink
a much better word in there would be probably the word I put in there, but if you need a different word then here it is....'negative remarks'

I think that is a much better fit.

Thanks Smile

cr _ p = doggy doo . You can see the auto-edit by typing and hit preview post, it is not editted by anyone, it is done automatically the same way that damn = dadgum on the groundspeak forums.

the forum software automatically changes many bad words. No manual intervention needed. I don't recall what words get replace with what, but that may be one of them.
