One of my goals over the next year is too look at the feasability of setting up a "loaner" gps program free of charge.

This would enable those that do not have the funds to buy GPS's to still learn how to cache and get out there. Or for new cachers who aren't sure about the investment try it out.

I'm working out the details and was wondering what cachers do with their old GPS's when they upgrade? Other then keep them for a spare -

For those that have upgraded or looking at upgrading in the future - would you be willing make available your old GPS for the cause?

You would still obtain ownership, just be willing to lend it out -

Thanks for trying to get a worthy cause off the ground.

My original Magellan SportTrak Map was working fine before I upgraded.

You are very welcome to use it but it is about 5 year old technology. LCD screen, no colour, maps but no routing capability. The good news is that it is pretty accurate.

Having this geo-community service on the mainland would be great too!

We have been doing this for a few years with all our old (and new) GPS units. We also bought a couple that were a good deal on EBay to add to the loaner drawer. We have sent them as far as Ontario last Spring Break for a kids' camp. I load them with maps (on trial Wink ) and send them off for adventures. We loan them to tourist for a little cache outing, as well as locals as you've suggested who want to try it out before taking the plunge.

We also have 4 link cables that we loan out - it's amazing how many people leave them at home and then can't load their GPS once they get here.

Having stuff for Delorme's comes in handy too.

Ours have been out with local families, middle schools, Scouts, Guides, tourists, seniors, and all sorts in between. One actually went on a date! If locals do decided they want to buy one, we send them to Valhalla here on the island because last time I checked with the owner they matched the online stores prices.

If you're on the island and you want to donate an old GPS to a good cause, please let us know and we'd be happy to help them have a bit of a reincarnation. Heck, we'll trade you for some coins if you want!
