Ah, I can answer this one... Dominion Astrophysical Observatory is National Research Council private property.
Their manager contacted Groundspeak this past summer and asked to have all caches on their property removed. I phoned the manager at DAO and asked about it and they said that they had no idea they had caches on their property until just recently - they were surprised that they were never asked because it is private property - theirs. They looked into geocaching and found out all about our hobby/sport and determined it wasn't an appropriate activity to have on their property, especially since permission hadn't been granted - and wouldn't be.
We were also told that the area is a very sensitive ecosystem with a lot of rare and fragile flora and fauna. They allow researchers from around the world to have access to the trails to study the plants but they do not maintain the trails for 'public use'.
Groundspeak has been instructed to not list caches that start or finish on their property and we as cachers need to support their request. We went around and around on this with them from all angles and it's not going to change, sorry. We have a big playground here on the South Island, but that one is off limits to everyone, including geocachers.
