So does anyone know what they are going to do with $165,000 to help towards geocaching in the area? How many ammo boxes are they stashing and how good will the swag be - hmm TB's?

I could use a bit of that to help with the gas bill to get there.. lol

That should be enough to get a gps and provide free interent for each resident -

But seriously out of curiosity - what are their plans

I should have clarified my question a bit more - if they don't have plans yet - any chance you think they'd be interested in using it to help fund a mega event???

I believe the grant will be used to place caches. It's still in the planning stages and I'm not sure exactly what will be taking place. Earthquake and Wild Wiggly Beanz are currently in charge of this endeavour and continue talks with Gold Country Tourism.

I have no doubt that Gold Country would be open to the possibility of hosting a Mega Event. That's a really good idea, actually. It would definitely put Cache Creek (or whatever area they use) on the Geo map.

Too bad for them that I stole their name for my first cache. They can buy it from me for 160,000 dollars Very Happy

A mega event would certainly do more in attracting cachers then general advertising or placing a bunch of caches.

Yup. 3000 cachers (Geowoodstock VI) visiting Cache Creek, pop.1200, would be news all right. I say go for it.

I must say that it is about time that the Federal Gov did something good with 'our' money!
What a great thing to do with it to.
I do agree that a Mega Event would be a wonderful idea, as it would bring people from all over to Cache Creek.

I've talked to Gold Country (as my home, Ashcroft, is right next door!) as they asked me to provide them with some ideas about geocaching. Their plan is loosely to have 72 caches hidden for next spring and to have over 200 within the next couple years. The caches will be hidden at points of interest kind of history driven and to boost tourism in the Gold Country region. The caches will contain something that people can collect and once cachers have a certain amount of them they can cash them in for a prize. I hope to work with them on the project as it is so close to home and there really isn't enough caches in our area here (Ashcroft, Cache Creek for sure as I think I'm basically the only one with caches here in the towns!) They have someone starting on the process in October sometime. Hope this sheds a little light!

100 to 200 geocaches would definitely be an incentive to go up to Gold Country for a daytrip or weekend.

That sound great to have 200 caches placed up there, but 200 caches at $165,000.00 = $825.00 per cache, thay must have some great swag in them! Shocked lol

To my understanding they have hired someone to set up the whole thing (wages for 2 or 3 years), they are creating a separate website as well for the caches (but still want the geocaching.com pages too), creating booklets for the caches as there will be themed caches and otehr ideas. When they applied for the money they weren't exactl how much they could get so they kinda threw in ideas left and right so that they wouldn't be short cash and then the government actually gave them a decent amount. Gold Country is a larger area then just Ashcroft, Cache Creek so they will have alot of set up work and maintenance of the caches. I'm sure the money won't last as long as we all think!
