Our volunteer reviewers Wizard of Ooze and Scootch work hard year round to publish caches and help newer cachers navigate through the hoops of placing their first cache. They also answer questions and receive feedback (not always positive or pleasant) from cachers in general. Through all this how many of us have been pleasantly surprised to find that we sometimes receive same day service for a new listing?

I've been looking at the great geocaching events we have going on in BC this summer: the Island Spirit Mega, the Gold Country Phase II launch, the 2012 Seek the Peaks, the continuing BCGA Blitz and others.

Each of these involve a rather significant number of new caches to be reviewed and listed.

So . . . please be patient and kind with The Wiz and Scootch. If you are placing a cache with a time limit (like the Blitz) give them LOTS of notice to have it published.

On behalf of the cachers in BC a tip of the hat and a heartfelt THANKS to our hard working reviewers who this summer have a HUGE extra workload so that we can go out and play!

Good topic, Kat....thanks for bringing it up!

I think the only time most of us really consider our reviewers is when we have a problem with a placement.

When I was a new cacher my first placement was very important to me. It was like my baby. I put a lot of thought and effort into it. And, when it was rejected with what I thought was a "silly" rule I took it personally. I spent oodles of time trying to justify the cache and point out other similar caches that had been published. All to no effect....the Wiz stood strong;-) And rightly so. As I gained experience I realized that the silly rule had a very good and reasonable basis (that doesn't stop me from grimacing every time I pass the GZ Wink )

A few caches later I had another problem, this time Scootch was the reviewer. And what I learned with this experience was that our reviewers are more than willing to help you make your caches the best they can be. It was a long process, but, eventually this cache, in it's ammended state, has become one of my most popular. All because Scootch took the time to work with me and Groundspeak as I modified the cache so that it became "legal". It was a wonderful learning experience and I am truly grateful!

I haven't had any problems since because I took the time to become *very* familiar with Groundspeak's guidelines and policies and keep up with any ammendments. It makes sense to know the rules of the game.

But, our reviewers don't see every cache in the field. It is our responsibility as more experienced cachers to help monitor caches that we find. If there is something highly questionable about a new cache, it is our duty to mention it. Not as a finger-pointer but as a member of a communtiy that just wants to make our game better for everyone. A friendly comment in the log or an email to the c/o is usually all that is necessary. But, something potentially dangerous should be forwarded on to the reviewer that published the cache. They then can contact the c/o with advice.

I would like to add my thanks to Kat's to our terrific vollunteer reviewers. Way to go, guys! Medal Medal

I must concur. Our reviewers are very hard working and use their own personal time to review and publish caches as well as Help us in every way they can.
And YES Qwackers I agree. But bring the geocache police is a very unpopular position as I can attest to. And not all cachers like hints, comments, suggestions on their cache log or in an email. In fact some get downright nasty about it. One must grow a thick skin..
It is my hope and wish that all cachers are aware of the guidelines and abide by them.
Until then the reviewers have my utmost gratitude for being there for us.. Thank You!!

With the amount of new caches that come out in BC, I am sometimes amazed at how fast my caches are published.

Our reviewers definitely deserve our appreciation.

Excellent topic Katcogo!

Of all the Reviewers that tas and I have encountered in publishing (and trying to publish)caches, each and every one of them have been polite, knowledgeable, gracious and all too willing to assist.

Ok...sometimes their decisions have initially driven me temporarily crazy..lol...but always for a very good and totally logical reason.

Over the years we have learned a great deal about ethical Geocaching from our Reviewers. To these 'Volunteers' that seem to spend a HUGE portion of their time doing cache reviews and then publishing caches in record time(sometimes within minutes of a cache submission!)....a hearty THANK YOU!!!!

Great thread.
Humongous Thanks to our reviewers Wizard of Ooze and Scootch!!!
For a volunteer job it takes a lot of time that you could be spending caching. Youse have always been gracious and professional.
Thank you for the gift of your Time. You are appreciated. (Sound of thunderous applause, whistles and cheers!!!)

I think it is important we self-police ourselves and reach out to inexperienced hiders in a positive way.
Funny, I think of 'cache police' as those that post patronizing, unkind notes on a c/o's cache page, making it all public and embarrassing for someone who in all innocence has placed an illegal hide. I've never seen someone deliberately place an illegal hide, it's usually done out of inexperience and enthusiasm for a 'clever' hide. They think 'I've never seen this done' not realizing it's because it isn't allowed. lol
The reviewers in some cases have to trust that the hide is ok. If it isn't then it's up to us finders to reach out to the hider.
A diplomatic, truthful log and a private e/m to the c/o explaining the issue along with a link to placement guidelines and a cut/paste of the pertinent section usually is enough for a hider to remedy any issue. Kindness, diplomacy and treating someone how you would like to be treated for an honest error usually does it.
Before you send an e/m ask yourself: would I appreciate this e/m?
In all these years only ever had one rude e/m response and it wasn't about their hide.

I noticed this on geocaching.com's website and thought of this thread. It's a cute video showing what the volunteers do.
