Introducing the New BCGA Coin

Here it is, the new and much anticipated BC Geocaching Association coin. We are calling it 2011 - like a grape vintage, or an Academy Award nomination. It is the coin of the 2011 Executive.

What’s New?

The past few coins have come in 3 versions, Regular, Member Only, and LE that were reserved for the Executive and/or Designer. We came up with 3 versions too but we liked them all so much that we decided to make EACH ONE available to EVERYONE.

We are allowing members the exclusive chance to purchase the coins until midnight, Feb 29, with sales opening to the public on March 1 till the close of presales on March 15.

The Coins

We put out a contest for the coins and received a number of interesting and creative submissions. Paul Saunders (The_Polywog) came up with the concept of a slice of a Western Red Cedar. His design included a bit of foliage, the BCGA logo in the middle, and for a bit of fun, a bison tube representing the hated micro in the woods (which conveniently carries the tracking number). A very simple yet unusual concept. For the next step we met with Darren Dofher (Wild Wiggly Beanz) to work on a full-fledged design. Darren took it above and beyond anything we (and Paul) could ever imagine. As a result we have a beautiful design that we feel captures the spirit of British Columbia.

This is a slightly irregular-shaped coin, large (2 “) with a nice heft. The outside ring represents the bark, while the tree rings are textured into the metal. The maple leaves in the forefront of the front and back measure the seasons from spring, through summer, into fall on the different finishes.

The back echoes the front and features a sculpted photo of an alpine mountain scene. This picture is of Drinnon Pass in Valhalla Provincial Park near Slocan. (GC1EBP5 is a cache located further along the trail – the cache page has pictures of area scenery posted by finders). The edge of the coin reads “We know a place - We’d like to share” “Come along - We’ll show you where”. We feel this captures the deep love for the outdoors that every geocacher shares, along with a desire to bring other cachers to our favourite places.

Sales and Specials

Sales of the coin should start in a few days. You will once again be able to order through the website with secure payment through Paypal, or you can download an order form for payment via cheque (or cash in person). We have ordered 250 of each finish so we may sell out quickly. We expect to receive these coins March 16 with distribution shortly after. We will ship anywhere and will have a pick up day somewhere in the Lower Mainland - TBD.

We will have coin samples and order forms at the
Feb 29 Flashlight Flash Mob+ Event GC3C7CN

The price is a very reasonable $10.00 per coin plus shipping where applicable. Any orders of more than 1 coin will have a BCGA pin included at no extra charge. A special offer for BCGA members is a clearance of 2010 BCGA Member only coins for the special price of $5.00 while supplies last.

The finishes

Spring – Antique Gold
Summer – Antique Bronze
Fall – Antique Silver

A very nice design that really says BC geocaching! I love the three colorways as well...spring, summer and fall. Thanks for all the hard work in designing and getting them out!

I noticed on the AGM cache page, the association was planning on having some on-site sales...I had pre-ordered the set. Is it possible to pick up my order at the AGM?

Coins arrived today, and they are excellent; I really like the design, and the bison tube is a nice touch. Kudos to the previous BCGA Executive... and the whole coin team!
