Well I've spent the last few hours searching the forum (and others) trying to find out how to de-scramble some of the hints that we find on some caches.

I did find some cypers (?) , but after carefully entering the code a few times, it came up scrambled again! different letters but definitely not understandable.

Can someone point me in the right direction please? there must be a thread or discussion about this, we can't be the first newbies to run into this situation.

Thanks!

Mac.

ya that's the one. didn't work! darn. I am guessing that I enter the scrambled hint then push the rot-13 transformation button? I entered it forward, then backward. no joy! LOL oh well. Maybe we'll stake the cache out, then when some GC'ers come by we'll wave a starbucks in front of them to force them to talk! bwahahahaha

Did you use the "decrypt" link above the hint? It should decrypt it for you.
What is the text you are trying to decode?

Hi again! ok, I'm looking at the hint on my iphone, but there's no decrypt link on the screen.

The particular cache is "Ha ha ha ha" its in Coquitlam just off of lasalle place. We looked for a good 1/2 hr a few evenings back, but ? it might be obvious to experienced gc'ers though, we're still discovering some clever hiding devices that folks use.

SE o.4mi

the hint is: ifig iflof eiloof ebahewi efeu

thx!

Mac

Did a quick Google search on the string of characters you provided and Voila!

ivy Look up ivy at Dictionary.com
O.E. ifig, from W.Gmc. *ibakhs (cf. M.L.G. iflof, Du. eiloof, O.H.G. ebahewi, Ger. Efeu), of unknown origin; the second element in the O.H.G. word may be "hay." Ivy bush as a sign of a tavern where wine is served is attested from mid-15c. Ivy League, inspired by the notion of old, ivy-coated walls, dates to 1933. (It consists of Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Yale).

Don't think there is anything wrong with the decoder - I get the same on my PC - some COs put a code within a code - you could try an anagram solver - only other thing I can think of.

thank you all! I've tried all sorts of stuff, no luck though. I did try a latin to english translator, nope. Then I did it in rot13 then took that result and tried to covert it into english. no again!

Might have to just write this one off Sad

As Highlander 71 said, they are all words for Ivy

Is the cache not hidden in some ivy?

Have you ever been in a forest and the hint has said "at the base of a tree" or "base of stump" or whatever? Yep it is in ivy. No need for a hint for that.

Hahahah, Ya I know what you mean. It just seems that Mac is confused as to the meaning of the hint, not its "hintiness". I agree it is a total non hint and useless if you dont have internet access in the field.

Drives me nuts when the hint is a trivia question, something that you probably don't know, and can't research when you're out at a cache. "The cache is the same as the 3rd Def Leppard Album Name"(fake example).. huh? I can handle a reverse string, heck I have a hint in pig latin but stuff that many people would not know.. just don't put a hint at all.

I did one a few weeks ago. Terrain 4, I was balanced on the side of a hill and this was the hint:

ANAGRAM, (4 words): Rebated Court Venue

It may as well been in Latin.

Everybody knows that's "Beaver Undercut Toe" or maybe "Beaten Curved Route", but "A Bouncer Duvet Tree" seems to work.
