I'm looking to see if anyone else has had similar issues & has had any success in dealing with Garmin on it.

I was thrilled to find a shiny new 62s under my tree a few mornings ago, but have been struggling with a couple of issues - the infamous creaking for starters, but more concerning is that the d-pad pretty much wont go to the right without applying FAR too much force.

I put a message to Garmin about it Christmas day & got their response this afternoon, telling me to try a firmware update / master reset before contacting them for an RMA number.

The part i'm scratching my head about is theyve acknowledged that my unit was less than a year old and covered under warranty (duh!), but they want ME to pay for the return freight of the defective one AND I get the joy of not getting to use, see, smell, touch my new GPS for 15-18 WORKING days before they send me back a refurbished one.

Huh?

For starters, I might not be the brightest guy out there, but, I dont think i was the only one who could have predicted that the firmware upgrade didnt have any impact on the obvious hardware problems. Secondly, I dont think it's acceptable for me to be on the hook for return freight (+ insurance) - and to go a month before converting my NEW unit for one that's already been identified as defective & put back into circulation.

And yes, I've already tried the dealer, my wife got it from Steveston Hardware & they pointed to their little sign on the wall that reads "no returns on electronics".

Ive suggested to their customer service agent that their proposal isnt going to wash & I obviously mistunderstood their reply. Before I go further down the standard path of escalating unhappiness with them I figure its worthwhile to see if anyone else has had the problems and had success?

Maybe I was a gullible one, or just desperate. I too had problems with my Dakota 20 so I emailed Garmin and they replied back within a couple of days. We emailed back and forth, with Garmin suggesting a few tries, and I trying it and emailing back with saying that didn't work. There were times when I was on the computer doing something else and another email reply would come in from Garmin after having just sent one to them. I must say that their response was very good and timely. I got to know Michael from Garmin quite well. In the end though, I did have to return my unit to RayTech in Quebec in return for a refurbished one.

Oh wonderful!! I just purchased one yesterday - the gift that keeps on giving.

I hope I don't end up wishing I had stayed with Magellan.

I have to admit, dollar for dollar, my little explorist 500 was a better deal than my colorado 300. I wonder how the most current models compare to each other.
