Hi everyone, we are planning to get a Garmin Oregon 550 and we would like some advice on what maps would be good to load into it. Does it need any maps besides what it comes with. We are referring to the Oregon 550 not the 550T. Any links for free maps would be appreciated too!

Thanks

It doesn't really come with any maps.
You'll want them and for free I'd recommend Ibycus.com

Both those mapsets are good topo and trail maps, but the best (and routable!) free road maps I've come across are based on the Open Street Map (OSM) data. You can download Garmin-ready sets from here:

garmin.na1400.info/routable.php

The coverage in Vancouver is better than Garmin's own.

If you don't have MapSource installed, you should download it from Garmin. Then, use the Garmin Mapsource installer (an .exe) from na1400. I don't have the files on hand at the moment to know how they're named...

For the archives, the important files that you get from na1400 are:

osm_routable_gmapsupp.zip
osm_routable_mapsource.exe
osm_routable_roadtrip.zip
osm_routable_tiles.zip

The *_gmapsupp.zip file is a raw Garmin map image (zipped), the *_mapsource.exe is the same image except packaged in an installer that puts it right into Garmin's MapSource (Windows) program, the *_roadtrip.zip is for Garmin RoadTrip (MacOS), and the *_tiles.zip contains the raw tiles for use in other programs.

The only thing I don't like is that the oceans don't show up very well, at least it is a better street map than the rest. Thanks or the help
