We hope so as we’re opening up the design to everyone who wants to give it a try.

Design a coin, front and back, and let your imagination run wild. Make it round or make it any shape you want. Just make it unique!

Please include all pertinent information about the coin you’ve designed. We need to know what size it is, what metals are used, is it 3D or 2D, enamel colors, any special attributes, etc. Please include Pantone chart numbers for enamels, glitters and glow in the dark. If you need help you can find a Pantone color chart here.

The coin designs don't have to be camera ready art. If you can get your concept down on paper, please send that to us. We're not looking for artistic perfection. We're looking for fresh ideas. We will give all submissions the same respect and consideration. In addition we reserve the right to refine any design (but with full disclosure to the designer prior to changes), use different metals, enamel colors or special enamels such as glitter, glow in the dark, etc.

Please do not post your design on the forums.

Here are the basic guidelines you need to follow for your submissions.

Submit your designs to: 911turbos @ bcgeocaching.com
Subject Line: 2010 BCGA Coin Design

Please include, on your submissions:
~Your caching name if you have one
~Your real name (first and last)
~Your email

~Designs need to be in jpg or gif format.
~Images should be no larger than 500kb (that’s front image 500kb, back image 500kb).
~Designs must be submitted by March 15, 2010.
~Trackable at Geocaching.com or Track at Geocaching.com must appear on the coin.
~There does need to be a space available to etch tracking numbers so please incorporate that into your design.
~Submit as many designs as you like.
~At least one side should be BCGA related ie. incorporating our logo and the letters BCGA.
~Designs must not infringe on any copyrights or trademarks.

The winning submission will become property of the BCGA, no matter which coin manufacturer is used. The BCGA directors will be selecting the final design. There will be one design picked to become the BCGA coin, although we may or may not use any of the designs submitted.

Design winner will receive 15 limited/artist edition coins for their efforts.

All non-winning designs submitted will be released back to the owner/designers the day the BCGA directors select a winning design.

This contest is open to everyone except BCGA Directors and their immediate families.

DO NOT POST ANY IMAGERY ON THE FORUMS!!

As a critic of last years procedures I am happy to have a chance for input. I have the artistic abilities of a blind canine but I do have ideas.

In no particular order:

Animals:

Kermode (Spirit) Bear
Cougar – has been done on the Landsharkz coin
Salmon – Orca having been done
Eagle – Stellar Jay having been done
Roosevelt Elk – on Vancouver Island and near Revelstoke I think
Moose – north of province
No skunks – sorry lol – read 2008 plea

Scenery:

Hell’s Gate
Orchard scene from Okanagan
Hoodoos – visited on Gold Rush
Balancing Rock – near Kamloops – visited on Gold Rush
Whistler/Blackcomb from across Alta Lake – Olympic theme
New and old Alexandria Bridge across the Fraser near Yale

BC icons

Fishing boat
Myra Canyon trestle – a trestle was also done on a Landsharkz coin
Totem Pole as suggested by Scruffster last year
Lighthouse – North Van, Mayne Island etc
Gold pan
MV Moyie – in Kaslo

I tried to come up with ideas from other areas of the vast province that many may never have seen.

How easy is it for a coin to have a finish like the Olympic medals where it is etched as opposed to the design being in relief? Is that the right term?

Many of these may be beyond what could be easily shown on a coin but at least a starting point for discussion.

Personally, I like the idea of an Olympic themed coin. Though we should be careful on how we use it. Something not yet used should also be part of the coin.

Can someone who has all of the previous coins post an image of them. Would be silly to work hard on a design and have someone say....oh that looks just like the 2008 coin..... Smack

Kermode Bear was on a BC Parks coin
Eagle (Golden) is on this year's BC coin
We put a Moose on a BC Parks pin but that's it.

A vineyard (not tree fruit orchard) from the Okanagan was on the 2009 BC coin.

In 2007 we designed the Kinsol Trestle on Vancouver Island onto the BC coin...but that year we were initially going to do the Myra Canyon trestle. We decided to do the Kinsol for political reasons - it needed exposure...
We have a totem coin in final production (4 part coin that joins so you can build your own totem).

I'm pretty sure that the Olympic medals are 'struck' not die stamped'. With the coin production facilities that are traditionally used to make geocoins affordably, you can cast or stamp coins.

It would be really cool to have an Olympic theme coin this year but copyrights and trademarks still need to be observed - I doubt for a minute that VANOC is going to disband and turn their backs anytime soon.

Very creative Scruffster!

Now if only there was room to slip a Shark in there and maybe a Porsche, some Beanz, an Old School, a Magic Wand, A Pirate Ship and a Gecko, but it's pretty obvious that this art speaks so well of caching in our fair province without any the above distractions...

Shouldn't the foot prints be that of a skunks paw? Or is he sniffing out the cachers? Jester

Actually, the footprints on the front are supposed to represent two geocachers that came upon the skunk and ran away.
