Thanks a bunch for the info!
I lost my Garmin Summit HCX last year around this time and still haven't replaced it. So looks like I will by the end of the month. Smile

Glad I had one last look before I bought....
It's the Garmin GPSMAPS 60cx not the 60CSX
BIGGGGG difference.
The main one being that the 60cx doesn't have an electronic compass.

You can actually get the Garmin Summit HCx at www.gpscentral.ca for 219.99 and it has almost all the features of a a 60csx including the electronic compass, it's just in the smaller "etrex" style.
So for those of us that are used to the "etrex" it's the way to go.
I had one before and it's the best bang for your buck for the "non-paperless" machines out there. Lightweight, super accurate.
So I think I'll go back to one of those...

I just use my Palm treo to go paperless. Smile

It's not a big difference. You would not miss the compass, because as when you are moving, you will have a compass (just loose it standing still). Matter of fact I have often been out with geodug, where his electronic compass has gone out of calibration and he is wandering around far off the cache. It is not a feature I'd say you absolutely need. On the odd time you need to know a direction (and that probably is not that often) just walk 10 paces and the regular GPS compass will give you the info.

I have the cx version and have never needed the electronic compass. Many of the Colorado and Oregon owners I know actually turn it off as it does go out of calibration often.

It also draws more power, meaning more battery changes / charges.

Fair enough, I guess it's just whatever you prefer. I much prefer being able to get a bearing with out having to move...
I used to just calibrate the compass every time I went to cache, takes about 15 seconds and saved me having to get out my regular compass. lol
When I'm doing a PRECISE reading I still use my regular, but I hate not having the electronic one built in.

I was SOOO happy when I got the summit that had it built in, 90% of the time I'm taking a direction bearing standing still. and since I never use a GPSr in a vehicl, I don't have one :), IT's anoying to have to move back and for to get an approximate reading when an acurrate one is so easily available.

I've used both the 60cx and the 60csx and much prefered the csx.
Everybody caches differently though.... Smile

oh and I forgot... if your using an old gps like mine (12 channel from 2000) then you need too walk a lot further than 10 paces before it'll register a direction change, I've walked blocks and blocks in the city before it has changed before, so it all depends on the machine.
if you have a WAAS enabled high sensitivity reciever without compass than it's not as big of a deal, but if your like my dad and you have one with a compass and without the high sensitivity, it can be a godsend....
Smile

If I had a 60cx I'd be happy enough with it but since I can get the summit HCX with almost all the same features except the address look-up, for 30-50$ dollars less, why not?

It's all what features you want, lol.

True less money however my wife has the summit and I have the 60cx. A couple things we have noticed over the 2 years we have owned them is that mine tends to be more accurate and losses signal far less in dense forest than her's. I attribute this to the external antenna as opposed to the internal one on the compact units. One other problem with the more compact units is the protective rubber around the edge of the whole unit has come unglued and slides around making it hard to push the buttons when not lined up correctly. We found this to be a common problem with people who own them.

Really? My old etrex had the rubber come loose, but I had no problem with my summit. I would rather have a 60cxs than a summit, but (for me I'd rather have a summit than a 60cx)

However you are correct, my summit definetly lost signal more often then the 60csx.

Couple of other subtle points, and yes, i'm biased, I LOVE my 60Cx.

The screen is bigger on the 60Cx and, the antenna/accuracy/fix thing - it's not just that the 60Cx has an external antenna, it's a different kind of antenna completely. Before I made the decision to buy th 60Cx I found a large number of articles about the antenna/fix quality - but, ironically, went looking & couldnt find them now.

The prices on the Garmin units are changing quite fast. A Mart store with a big Wal in front of it was selling the Map60Cx for $228. Their stock comes and goes, but the sales person told me that even though they had 6 units in, they were getting more in often.

I have a Map60Cx and find it very sensitive and rugged.

I also bough a Dakota 20 for $269 in Kamloops. Actually it was on sale for $319 but Garmin has a mail in rebate of $50 US until June 30, 2010.

Having said all that I might direct you to the SWAG thread on this web site. There is talk about a new Garmin Map62 series which appears to combine the sensitivity and ruggedness of the Map60 series with better features of the Oregon/Dakota series. The best of both worlds comes with a price, however, showing some prices up to $550.
