Anyone here using iGeocacher for ipod/iphone? Here's a mini review.

I usually use an old Handspring Palm OS PDA for paperless caching, but my 4th one just died. I've been buying them on craigslist for $20, but I've about had it with these PDAs which are over 10 years old. At least I don't get so mad when I drop one in a puddle of water or just smash it on the ground.

I recently got an ipod touch and was thinking of ways to use it with gpx files. The main iphone geocaching app doesn't store gpx info. It has to go out to the internet to grab the cache info just like Trimble does on the Blackberry. This isn't ideal for a non-connected ipod touch, but may work great for the iphone.

I eventually found iGeocacher which costs $14.99. I thought pretty expensive, but if I had to spend $20 to get another 10 year old PDA, why not give it a try. So I caved and bought it. I had to do something cause my PDA broke a month ago and I haven't been caching since. I was going through withdrawal.

So I used it on my first outing. Loading the gpx file needs a webserver. This is the trickiest part if you don't have one. They will also host the file for you too. After it's loaded the cache listing is great. You can search by name and waypoint name.

The only thing I haven't figured out is how to log caches as you find them. It doesn't look possible, but I've only used it once. If anyone also uses this app I'd be interested to know how you keep track of your finds. If you are using this on the iphone you can just connect to the website and log it in the field. I rather just keep a list in the order I find them and log them when I get home.

Check out Geosphere. I think it will have everything you need. You can use your wireless to download pocket queries to it and then view everything off line out in the field. I also think it stores field notes of your cache finds that you can access offline as well. Check it out through iTunes.

That is a great App for the Touch. Downloaded it today but had a bit of an issue getting caches into the database. Not the apps fault, mine. Smack

We load the caches from GSAK. Export a GPX file ver 1.0 then email it to ourselves. The issue here is what to use as an email account. Hotmail DID NOT work. We set up a Yahoo account and Yahoo mail works perfectly. The caches d/l into the database and away you go. Nice easy interface and really simple to understand. Must be really nice on the iPhone.

Great recommendation TS.

Thanks Very Happy

Thanks TESKELLY.

I'm going to try geosphere out. Guess I have to fork out another $7.99.

It says you can upload your field notes. I have a business trip coming up and want to be ready with my new paperless caching system.
