Hey everyone!

I decided that I'd like to surprise someone special on his birthday with a geo-cache adventure. Problem is! neither of us have ever done it, own any equipment, or have a clue as to where to start.

Can I RENT a GPS in Victoria, BC? And then what? Or are there any 'beginners cache adventure' courses that we can take?

I can't spend hundreds of dollars on a new device, but this DOES seem like the most awesome thing ever. Any advice on where I can start?

Thanks!

Kelly

There is a GeoCaching 101 event in Victoria on Sunday February 22, 2009 - 2:00 pm. If the birthday date works out, this is the ideal spot to get your feet wet. Click the More Info link on the BCGA home page for more of the article.

Or.. if not.. What is the cheapest that I could purchase one? I read an article on what to look for in a GPS device, but everything I immediately stumbled across was 5 or 6 hundred dollars... does everyone, seriously, spend this much money before they even TRY out geo-caching? There has got to be a better way! Smile

I don't know of anyplace to rent one, but I live in Kelowna...

You can get a very effective GPS for about $280 (Garmin Hcx) or a basic one for around $100, check out One of our sponsors for some ideas. Walmart and Canadian Tire also stock a couple of units, if you want to see some up close.

Be aware that, if you buy a real cheap unit, and you do end up playing this very adictive game, then you will outgrow it very soon.

Someone from your area may soon post here, they might even offer to take you along, or loan you one of thier older units.

Oooo that sounds great. I'm scanning www.usedvictoria.com for a used one as we speak. Oooo I'm getting excited!! Smile

I definitely can't fork out big money at the moment, but maybe if I'm lucky something just right will come along. Cross your fingers! Smile

Canadian Tire has a Garmin on sale for $89.00, regular $124.00. It's a good starter unit to see if you really like the sport or not.

Angel_of_life, we loan out our GPS units for no charge (just a credit card for security). We are in Saanich. You can reach us via landsharkz @ shaw.ca

We have 3 different GPS receivers that you can look at and get a feel for. Also, if you post a note on VIGPS.COM you might find someone local who has one for sale... because I know of a few cachers in town who have one too many! If you are a new cacher in Victoria, VIGPS.COM is also a good place to meet the some of the locals.

I do know of an 'open box' Garmin Colorado that a sailor is selling because he got a good deal on an Oregon. That's a bigger investment than most new cachers make though. He's at sea for another 10 days I think but you can test drive one here.

I forgot to mention that there is often "Introduction to Geocaching' and 'Introduction to GPS Use for Garmin Handheld Owners' held at Camosun College. I think the next set of classes will be in the spring. We teach these for Camosun, hence the cupboard full of Garmin GPS units. The best way to learn is to go to the upcoming Geocaching 101 together (you're an example of the reason the BCGA is holding them Very Happy ).

If you want to try some on the 19th, we can load the GPS with some easy local caches within reach of one parking spot. With some pre-loaded maps, a little instruction and some good hints you can probably find at least one of them!! If you come to the 101 event a couple of days later, you'll be fresh from trying it out and perhaps you'll be better able to focus your questions to reduce your learning curve.
